The TOWL-4 measures skills in two areas: Contrived Writing (sentence writing) and Spontaneous Writing (story writing). The Contrived Writing section consists of the following subtests:

Vocabulary measures skill in writing sentences with specific words.
Spelling measures skill in writing dictated sentences.
A Punctuation score is obtained when these same sentences are scored for capitalization and punctuation.
Logical Sentences requires children to edit illogical sentences.
Sentence Combining requires children to combine sentences in the best way.

Intérêt de l'écriture sous contrainte en classe de langue
Paradoxalement il semble que la contrainte, la règle d'écriture, ne gêne pas l'imagination de l'élève mais, au contraire, la libère. Elle permet de dédramatiser l'acte d'écriture.
"En se forçant à appliquer un certain nombre de règles, on peut écrire quelque chose qu’on n’aurait jamais eu l’idée d’écrire et que le résultat soit bon ou moins bon, sans la contrainte l'élève n'aurait jamais produit ce résultat" nous explique Valeria Ciampa, professeure stagiaire, qui a mis en place des ateliers d'écriture sous contrainte avec ses élèves de LV3.
La contrainte rassure donc, d'une certaine manière, et la présence de ce cadre semble convenir tout particulièrement aux élèves en difficulté. L'élève n'est alors plus évalué sur sa créativité mais sur le respect de la contrainte.

A total of eight subtests comprise the TOWL-3. The contrived format is utilized in the subtest of Spelling, Style, Vocabulary, Sentence Combining, and Logical Sentences. In the Vocabulary subtest, the student writes a sentence using a word given by the examiner. The Spelling and Style subtests ask the student to write dictated sentences, which are reviewed for punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors. In the Logical Sentences subtest, the student must make an illogical sentence into one that makes sense, whereas the Sentence Combining subtest requires the student to make one longer sentence out of two or three smaller sentences.
