You have a point. My interpretation has always been that since you can transfer from one bus to another, without paying again, that it is the *fare* that is single. If your interpretation is right, however, I would go with 'State Transit Card' and 'Municipal Transit Card'.

I thought "único" meant that it was good on all modes of transportation. My experience with metro transit cards is that the fare is based on the length of the trip and deducted on a computerized strip.

It's the *fare* that's single, not the municipality/state. Thus 'state transit card' or 'city transit card'. (I misread the question and was fixated on the "Falta do" part.)

(I think) basically yes, at least at the time of writing of your text. The transit transfer issue has been a constantly moving point of contention since implementation.

The original concept was that a commuter/rider would pay a single fare in order to complete their commute/trip using different combinations of transport.

Beatriz is exactly right. I believe "Falta do BUE/BUM" refers to problems with getting a free transfer from/to other systems. Yet according to

I just had to find out the meaning of BUE-BUM before I called it a day..

The links below are the best I could find so far – they don’t help much in terms of clarification, but at least they expand the acronyms BUE and BUM (+ another one, called BUC).

My understanding is that the State of Rio de Janeiro has a bus card system of its own (the respective Laws are mentioned below) that involves discounts for commuters and subsidies for some carriers, not all of them.

I really have to get some sleep now, otherwise I’d google it better (I love this kind of hide-and-seek game!).
