Though "dans le sens de" might indicate a particular direction, so might "following the circuit". As it can be "selon un tracé sinueux", the circuit is either rather a broad path (allowing wandering from side to side), or a general circuit incorporating optional detours.

I was surprised, reading Barbara Cochran's comment below, to see that this is yet another difference between British and American English. A bit of googling showed that Australian and New Zealand walkers also follow circuits, just like British walkers do.
