I spent a couple of years in college doing graphic design and then I was a blacksmith for a while. My experience in tinkering with motorcycles is all self-taught and didn’t come until a bit later.

“During the financial crisis of 2008, people weren’t looking for the ** decorative metalwork ** that I used to do, but a few friends of mine were asking for custom motorcycles. A couple of years later, XXX was born.”

Explanation:
A me era venuto in mente in realtà _ferro battuto_ visto che dice di essere in primcipio un fabbro, e se fai una ricerca di -decorative metalwork- vedi che le immagini proposte sono appunto di oggetti in ferro battuto. Mi lascia perplessa il fatto che lui utilizzi il termine metalwork e non ironwork.
Però, personalmente, direi proprio _ferro battuto_ , a meno che dal tuo testo non si evinca che il personaggio in questione non lavora solo il ferro ma anche altri metalli.
