in the rocking position Explanation: This is the position where both valves are closed, the inlet valve has just closed and the exhaust is about to open. It is called this because there is no valve spring pressure so the cam can be "rocked", i.e. easily rotated backwards and forwards by a small amount. At least it can on a single cylinder engine, on a multi-cylinder engine, there will be a valve spring on another cylinder that prevents this but the name for the position is still used. |
