French term or phrase: animation de la recherche /animer sa recherche
I've come across the dreaded (for me anyway) "animer" in my translation of a French university website describing the conditions for attaining accreditation to supervise research (HDR) status. This is in a scientific discipline.

"*Animation* et financement de la recherche
Il est souhaitable que le candidat ait fait la preuve de son aptitude à *animer* et financer sa recherche, notamment par un minimum de responsabilités reconnues au niveau de projets de recherche."

I'm not quite sure what to put here. Is is something as simple as lead or conduct research or is there a more dynamic sense such as coordinate or even promote? Or something else entirely?

UK English please.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Explanation:
Yes it keeps cropping up. It does tend to imply dynamism, input, empowerment, etc. What about (actively) directing or driving research ? I like your suggestions too.

agree  katsy: to be frank I think that 'driving' is really good.... covers a multitude of things, sounds good and dynamic (!) plus individual involvement, not just supervisory// ;-)

supervision/management of research

Explanation:
Lots of experience is required before being able to access the HDR "badge"!
That is acquired during a PhD, when supervising the work of masters' students working on the same project. As for the management side, when applying for a doctorat, more often than not, you have to find the funding. There's a sort of academic business plan to be put together. Thereafter, as an "ingénieur de recherche", for example, you will often contribute to putting a new project together. It is a project managemnt type role, starting with a PhD, then seconding an HDR before finally being able to apply yourself.

I would avoid using "direct" as that it might be a little presumptuous, suggesting that before having been awarded the HDR label, you were actually doing that job. It is sometimes the case, but there is a status thing attached to it too.

One of those situations where you have to show that you have gradually acquired sufficient experience, that you have in fact been doing the job, all but in name and that you are now ready to do so officially... and be better paid to ddo so.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Nikki, thanks for the suggestion, though what bothers me about the notion of 'just' supervision is that examples I found online list lots of conference organizing and other similar activities (see in discussion). So it seems like it's broader than just supervising others.

disagree  Dieezah: To me, these two concepts (animer and "promote" which in French would be more like "faire la promotion de") have nothing to do with one another...

facilitation of research /bring his or her research to life

Explanation:
I agree, this word is not an easy one to translate.

For the verb, I would maybe consider "bring to life"- although it might seem a little whimsical, I think that given the context, it could fit. It is essentially a job posting, and in my opinion the quality of really energizing the research is more important than simply "leading" or "conducting."

For the noun, perhaps you could use "facilitation?" This term to me could encompass any of a few different responsibilites, including supervising, conducting, or promoting the research.
