German term or phrase: städtebauliche Zusammenhänge
My source text states that in the 1970s/1980s, the field of heritage conversation began to look more at "städtebauliche Zusammenhänge" (this is in the context of the IBA Berlin 1987, which is partly credited for this paradigm shift). I understand what they mean--looking at whole areas and "how they hang together" rather than deciding whether isolated buildings are "special" and worthy of listed status, but I just can't find out a good, succinct way to say this in English.

Any thoughts?

English translation:the urban landscape as an ensemble
Explanation:
Based on your own understanding (I understand what they mean--looking at whole areas and "how they hang together" rather than deciding whether isolated buildings are "special" and worthy of listed status)

For the purposes of heritage conservation, the chief interest of the urban landscape as an ensemble is the mix of many types and ages of building in close proximity...

Despending on the sentence construction, the singular 'context' may be more appropriate in EN.

neutral  Helen Shiner: This means something else. Check Google./Exactly. That's not what's meant here. This is about the conservation of buildings within an urban framework, not development.

insights into urban spaces

Explanation:
Or "insights into the evolution of urban spaces"

Insights stands for Zusammenhänge (plural form!), an interplay of factors that are not always fully understood. These implications are lost with "context" because that's a more static term that carries less explanatory power.
