German term or phrase: Null-Grad-Gemüsefach

"Die zarten Blätter von Kopfsalat und anderem Blattgemüse schmecken am besten, wenn sie frisch und knackig in den Salat kommen. Leider halten sich die empfindlichen Blätter bei Zimmertemperatur meist nicht länger als einen Tag. Selbst im Kühlschrank mit speziellem ***Null-Grad-Gemüsefach*** wird Blattsalat nach wenigen Tagen welk und fällt in sich zusammen."

The problem is that I am translating into American English, so a straight translation like "zero-degree vegetable crisper" won't work because of the conversion to Fahrenheit. And even in Celsius, "zero degrees" would imply more of a freezer than a crisper. In Fahrenheit, it would really be a deep freeze. And that is obviously not what they are talking about here. Extensive googling hasn't given any real insights. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I agree that it must be a crisper and the "zero degree" bit should be kept out of it altogether. Yes, of course we use phrases like "below zero" and "sub-zero," but that refers to zero degrees Fahrenheit which is equal to about minus 17 degrees Celsius. That's not anywhere near the temperature of a crisper... maybe a deep-freeze.

The "Null-Grad" is misleading and not because of C/F. Afterall, Americans throw around phrases like "below zero." As Daniel pointed out, the leafy greens drawer requires above zero T and very high humidity. If it is just a crisper, then I think you may just have to leave out any reference to "null Grad", because English speakers (British or American) are going to be totally confused by the implication of keeping their salads at zero degrees.

it's called that way in German. Even, if you cannot put salad and some veggies in it. But it's the standard term especially when only one compartment.

As herbalchemist points out, there is something not right here. Salad vegetables cannot be kept anywhere near approaching freezing temperatures, so normally the salad crisper in a refrigerator would be somewhere in the region of 4-7 degrees. Lettuce in particular can't take cold temperatures, so it is simply not clear how the concepts of "Blattsalat" and "null-Grad-Gemüsefach" can possibly be linked.

It's a crisper drawer. The temperature is close to, but not at, freezing point, and the humidity is higher than in the text of the fridge

It seems that they are simply describing a crisper drawer, which is at the bottom of the fridge, a low temperature zone. In modern refrigerators, you can make a colder compartment, but lettuce should NOT be stored there.
