I've just realized that I haven't contributed to this question as much as I could.
As a native speaker of Portuguese, it would be more useful if I shared my view of the expression bancar o entendido, instead of arguing about the meaning of English expressions - you all know that much better than me :)
1) It shows some degree of annoyance. The person who says "bancar o entendido" is slightly (or very) annoyed because the other person is trying to show off.
2) It strongly suggests that the person trying to impress doesn't know so much as they think they do. "Bancar o entendido" is much different from "Mostrar-se entendido", for example. That sense of denying the knowledge of the person comes from "bancar".
Based on that, you will be able to choose a good translation for the expression. We have several good choices here :)
I hope you all have a great weekend! |
