The more sceptical among you will point out that I read those words before I conceived the conceit in these pages. But because you are humans, and in possession of a brain that has not evolved beyond entertaining superstition and mystery, some of you will be more open to the idea that I really did visit Jerome, that we really are somehow connected. Vishal, my astrologer, would have no problem with the concept, I suspect. After all, there is even evidence of our conversations about the nature of the universe. Jerome ends the book describing his source on such matters: “for all things more than mortal there is my attendant spirit which can neither be described nor alluded to and is not under my control.” He wonders on the page whether what he calls his “boundless love of truth and wisdom” drew this spirit to him. His next suspicion may be more accurate: “perhaps my angel was present with me for an end known to himself alone.”

Un po' libera, sopratutto per l'omissione del riferimento allo scarso grado di evoluzione del cervello umano, ma non poi così distante dall'originale.
