Sorry if it's too easy, but I'm translating this short story into English and just cannot formulate part of this sentence:

"Depois da enchente, as águas foram baixando... a devastação tinha sido grande."

How can I say "baixar" in the case of flood waters? To say that they "lowered down" sounds like Brazilian English to my ears.
