Social Sciences - Psychology / measurements of anxiety
Russian term or phrase: дезадаптация
Oddly enough, the cognate word "disadaptation" (spelled in the article I am editing, by a native speaker of Russian, as dysadaptation), does not seem to exist in English, except with regard to "faulty adaptation of the iris and retina to light" (dysadaptation) or "psychomotor disadaptation" as a specific disorder. Google Scholar's first page, with relevant words deleted from the search, gives only people with Russian surnames: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=disadaptation -psychomo...

The Oxford Online dictionary gives "misadaptation" as the closest word: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/search?utf8=✓&filter=dicti...

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, Oleg. But the google references you gave are just like the ones I cited in my question: this translation is only used by people with Russian or other Slavic surnames, so I think it is some kind of reverse calque. I saw the wiktionary entry, but it is not a very reliable source.

"Meaning and measurement of neuroticism and anxiety"
Free anxiety is here considered irrational and maladaptive in the sense
that It implies repression of the cognitive links whicli associate the
anxiety with its real causes.
It is hypothesized that the former are
relatively more involved in the neurotic process itself, whereas the latter
are, relatively, only contributory to the maladaptation ending in neu-
rosis.
By a malergy we mean any state, either in its introspectible or be-
havior pattern form, which is characterized by inefficient, subnormal,
maladaptive functioning of the organism, e.g., fatigue, depression,
worry, confusion.
would presumably favor neurosis in the sense that any
defect of brain metabolism is liable to produce misperception. poor
integration of experience, and maladaptive response.

interpretation and the extinction of maladaptive attitudes
Malergy. Any State (relatively temporary condition of the organism) char-
acterized by inefficient, subnormal, or maladaptive functioning; for example.
fatigue, anxiety, confusion. Malergies are thus one sub-class under States;
and not all states are malergies.
