Krzysztof Wodiczko The Abolition of War

A Polish-language version of Krzysztof Wodiczko’s book The Abolition of War.
The original publication came out in English in 2012. The generously illustrated book is part of the author’s art project. The Abolition of War concerns important social and political issues and refers to the exhibition The Need of Freedom, which has a social focus.

In this book, Krzysztof Wodiczko presents a detailed analysis of his proposal to the World Institute for the Abolition of War – an ‘un-war memorial’, a construction to be erected around the existing Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

The author’s non-negotiable position is that unless we acknowledge the existence of the present ‘culture of war’ and unless we cut the umbilical cord that continues relentlessly to tie us to the glorification of history and celebration of aggression, we must not claim that we will be able to solve the issue of armed conflict in the future. For peace to prevail, we must first face the ‘culture of war’, stop being in denial about it and finally abandon it. Krzysztof Wodiczko deliberately assumes new models of global interdependence as an indispensable step on the path to genuine peace.

His project is a proposal for an international trans-disciplinary place functioning as both a symbolic structure for inspiring philosophical, psycho-analytical, and political engagement, and as an activist centre to encourage analytical, proactive, and transformative approaches to the war-abolitionist process.

Seen by Wodiczko as one integrated Un-War Memorial, the proposed Institute for the Abolition of War is a structure surrounding the Arc de Triomphe. To abolish war, critical investigations must be made into its roots and artifacts.

Un-War: Krzysztof Wodiczko a film by Maria Niro

Artist Krzysztof Wodiczko uses art and design to help war veterans, refugees and other displaced city residents deal with their traumas while exposing some of his own.

“Un-War!” unravels the mystery behind Krzysztof Wodiczko and his political urban interventions. Since 1968, the radical artist has been challenging audiences all over the world with his work on some of the most prevailing issues of our time: war, homelessness, immigration, and Xenophobia, to name a few.
