The ST quote needs to be considered in its proper journalistic context. It is a photo caption, not a sentence drawn from the full article.

News articles are structured to entice the reader to discover the details in a progressive manner. The order in which a reader looks at an article is important – the photo and its caption often vie for first place with the headline. Those parts are aimed at grabbing the attention of the reader who knows nothing about the story – they are not intended to tell the story.

From a journalistic viewpoint, it would be nonsense to refer explicitly to "buttocks", or "sexual abuse" in the photo caption – because some readers will see that, make an instant value-judgement about the article as a whole, and skip to the sports page.

If the photo caption writer had thought it appropriate, from a journalistic standpoint, to refer to "acoso sexual" he would have done so. He didn’t – he used a more neutral/vague term "forced upon" – contributing to the progressive entrapment of the reader and encouraging him to delve into the text of the article. The translation should respect the paper editor's and copywriter's intentions.

I don't think "on" means "on top of". And according to the article it wasn't the case. He "saddled up to" her and "rubbed the woman’s backside between the 59th St. and 50th St. stops".

Legally defined (at least in the US) "rape" involves penetration, and that is not what occurred in this instance. In pointing out this fundamental distinction, I am of course not minimizing the nature of what did happen.

The article may be about groping but this particular incident is very well known, this woman was raped on the subway and nobody did anything!
