Hi Robert. If you take the sentence isolated yes, it could be ambiguous both in English and Spanish. But that is the way it is written and it makes sense in the context, since the lead states Barrett was captured after "shooting and wounding" Stepinski.
Come to think of it, another way of saying "allegedly" in journalism is "Gene Barrett, de 51 años, le habría disparado a JS en la cabeza aldededor de las....." etc.

Asker: Hi Cecilia, Thanks for your answer. What about if he Barrett had shot at Stepinski but missed? In other words, what would be the translation of the following sentence?: Barrett shot at Stepinski. Many thanks.

Asker: What I am getting at is that there seems to be an ambiguity in the following sentence: Barrett le disparó a Stepinski. This sentence could (it seems to me) mean one of two things: 1.) He shot at Stepinski (and the bullet[s] hit Stepinski). 2.) He shot at Stepinski (and missed). Please confirm. Thanks. :)
