common land / commons Explanation: The ST suggests that "vuelta" is similar, conceptually, to the use of "common lands" (or "commons") in the UK, as discussed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_land The equivalent to the ST's "vuelta", here in the southern Andes, is the "veranadas" referred to here: www.ub.edu/geocrit/coloquio2014/Cristina Hevilla.pdf where cattle are grazed on large tracts of state-owned land near the CL/AR border under the care of seasonally nomadic farm hands and their hangers-on. The "vuelta" is an allusion to the nomadic nature of the activity, necessitated by the continual movement of the herds in search of food. |

shared seasonal pasture Explanation: I can't find a word for this in English but it could be something on these lines. It's land rented out for grazing between a few farmers, with the tasks shared between them. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 hrs (2017-02-10 10:00:11 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- More references. They typically seem to be almond groves. The herds are kept there for the season and graze on the dry grass and litterfall. |
