Explanation:
the piston ring is a ring of a softer metal than that of the piston itself (e.g. a ring of brass on a piston of iron or aluminium). The ring fits tightly in a groove at the top of the piston. With the heat, the ring will expand slightly and provide for strict air tightness between the piston and the inner sheating of the cylinder. This is where a constant input of lubricating oil is necessary, or else, the ring will stick to the sheating. French for ring is : segment.
