Gli antichi egizi seguivano X come modello in quanto credevano di essere in grado di fare/di poter fare quello che faceva X/quello che lui faceva.

Così a mio avviso ha più senso.

Ho trovato anche il testo completo ("As a model, the Ancient Egyptians believed that what X did, they could do. Because he had conquered death, the righteous too might ..."), ma mi suona un po' strano... Mi fa pensare a due possibilità:

1) In linea generale/di massima - "As a general rule, the Ancient Egyptians believed that ..."

2) Essendo(/Considerandolo) un modello da seguire - "Being a role model, the Ancient Egyptians believed they could do what X did, provided they were righteous enough"
