a fine mist covered the outer edges Explanation: To the north,south and east there was nothing but that dirty and decidedly unpleasant sea, while on the far horizon a fine mist covered the outer edges of it. Blue sky appeared only here and there, between banks of clouds that blotted out the sun. |

a fine mist covered its borders Explanation: if confini refers to where the sea meets the sky then edges (referring to mare sporco) could work, however the Italian construction is ambiguous (without preceding context) and IMO it's unclear whether we are talking about the sea or some land that has appeared, has come into view on the far horizon. If it is indeed land that the ship is sailing towards and there is prior reference to this, then borders might be more suitable |
