Thanks to all for your input here. After discussion with client, it is a typo, so it should be 'cote'. However it isn't for altitude, the 'cote' here is a distance/measurement, the 'touche' is the ground contact point of the wave. So 'cote touche' is the 'contact distance' i.e. the distance between the sensor and the ground contact point.

I think you are absolutely right here: it should be 'cote' = altitude of the ground contact point — which is clearly an important parameter in this sort of field. As you say, this is such a common typo (and one that a spell-checker would not notice!) that it is safe to assume THIS word is the error, and not 'touche' (which a spell-checker wouldn't notice either — but hopefully a human would!)

"côte" is a common mispelling for "cote", ie the altitude of a point, that could be the point where the probe "touche" ie contacts the ground, which sets a reference for the relative depths mentioned later?

Maybe a typo for 'couche' since 'côte couche' would be the dimension(s) of the layer or location of same, followed by the depth.
