We'd already figured that out yesterday. Thomas provided the explanation and I posted the link with the exact same sentence, plus a graph (!) showing the months included. You wouldn't say "einschließlich" in German here, not least because you're talking about an average of three (and not twelve) months. It just looks odd.

I'd already quoted the FAZ yesterday as an example why you shouldn't trust what journalists translate all the time. If you want to have another example, google John Boehner and Ted Cruz and see how German journalists translated the insults of the former - they definitely must've been listening to too much rap music.

That's at least a solution: Saying "from...to" will remove any doubt about the period. I'd choose the first solution, since it says "declined" in the original and it looks better together (fiel...Tief).

If Thomas had just posted an answer, we wouldn't have had this discussion, nor a Google Translate answer.

To my ENS colleagues: The German "bis" gets you the same difficulties as the English "until," which can sometimes be a major headache.

Ich hab vorsichtshalber beim Kunden nachgefragt und folgende Antwort erhalten: The unemployment figure is a three-month average.

Dann werde ich es also so übersetzen:

Im Dreimonatszeitraum März bis Mai 2016 fiel die Arbeitslosenquote auf ein Elfjahrestief von 4,9%.

oder:

Im Dreimonatszeitraum März bis Mai 2016 erreichte die Arbeitslosenquote ein Elfjahrestief von 4,9%.

Wäre das eindeutig?

Ich würde es nach folgendem Muster übersetzen:
Die nach internationalen Standards erhobene Arbeitslosenquote sei in den drei Monaten bis Juli auf 5,5 Prozent gesunken.

That is helpful. "bis" is not, IMO, because it can be misread - especially if you say "den drei Monaten bis," which could be interpreted as "aber ab Mai stiegen die Arbeitslosenzahlen wieder an."

If you really want to stick with it, you can write it just as N-TV did:
"In den drei Monaten bis Ende Juni stiegen die Erlöse"

Of course, there are newspapers using the phrase:
"Danach ist die Arbeitslosigkeit in Britannien in den drei Monaten bis April um 20.000 Personen auf 1,67 Millionen gesunken."

But to me, the last sentence seems quite crude, not to mention whether it refers to the beginning or the end of April. Journalists aren't always the best company to keep around.

Saying "bis" will lead to assumptions like Edith's further below: "1.2.-31.4."

"Ich habe das bis Mai fertig." - now guess whether that means at the beginning or end of May. Hence, highly misleading.

You may just post your suggestion (incorporated below) and I'll agree:
"Mit 4,9% ist die über drei Monate gemittelte Arbeitslosenquote im Mai auf den niedrigsten Wert seit 11 Jahren gesunken."

The reference is still "May." Don't say "bis," but include your "Mittelung" - to that I can agree.

"in drei Monaten bis" sounds like MT.

You may even be able to drop the reference to three months, since there seems to be no other official figure, but that depends on the context.

The unemployment rate is for May. Take a look at the chart: Over months, it's at 5.1%, but drops to 5% in April, and to 4.9% in May [edit: Calculated based on a three-month period, as suggested by Thomas].

Gute Frage... Welcher Zeitraum ist hier überhaupt gemeint: die drei Monate bis Anfang Mai (also vom 1. Februar bis 1. Mai) oder die drei Monate bis Ende Mai (also vom 28. Februar bis 31. Mai)?

Aber welchen "Mehrwert" bietet denn hier die Information "in the three months"? Müsste man dann nicht auch sagen, wie hoch die Arbeitslosenquote zu Beginn des Dreimonatszeitraums lag? Ohne diese Information könnte man doch einfach schreiben: "In May 2016 the unemployment rate reached an 11-year low of 4.9%."
