I apologize but in front of all participants but I think my English is better. I think there is no question about what the translator shall do or not - we shall act (translate) according our best knowledge, beliefs and conscience and put all possible efforts to understand what we are translating, including all abbreviations even if the customer him/herself does not know what it is/can be. It's all about being and acting as a professional. Just my two cents in general.

@ Thomas: ganz richtig, unsere Aufgabe besteht ja schließlich nicht darin, alle möglichen Kürzel zu recherchieren (natürlich auch, wenn man sie findet - super, wenn nicht, dann muss man es halt so stehen lassen!)

Wieso nicht einfach so stehen lassen? Wenn der Zeugnisinhaber die Bedeutung auch nicht kennt, ist es riskant, diese Abkürzung mit Bedeutung zu füllen.
