English term or phrase: meaning of the recommendation
Hello everyone,

In the book I'm translating there is the sidebar titled "Use Your Existing Connections to Branch Out"

http://www.shadowsgovernment.com/shadows-library/Act Like a ...

page 76

Use Your Existing Connections to Branch Out

• Ask for referrals and introductions; make them for others.

• Ask for simple favors to initiate a relationship.

• Do your homework before you reach out to someone new.

• ***Do the trite stuff—write thank you notes; forward links to articles; follow up using social media.***

• Help your contacts develop their networks.

I'm not sure what "Do the trite stuff—write thank you notes; forward links to articles; follow up using social media" has to do with using your existing connections. If you should do the things mentioned with regard to people you're trying to make a contact with, how is it connected with using your existing connections? Or is it about your existing connections? But how can it help in making new connections?

In other words, who should you forward links, write thank you notes (etc.) to: your existing contacts or people you're trying to make a contact with?

Thank you.

Explanation:
First, "do the trite stuff—write thank you notes; forward links to articles; follow up using social media". This is important when you ask for referrals and introductions to new people outside your network, i.e. people you've never known before. This is the least you could do to show your appreciation and gratitude to your people in your existing network. If they didn't help you, you wouldn't have met these new people. So saying thank you, a follow-up, forwarding links to articles, etc. is the minimum you should do. If you didn't show any sign of gratitude or appreciation and take referrals and introductions as granted, these people in your existing network will never or hardly go through hoops for you next time. It is because of these people in your network that you are going to meet new people outside of your network.

As to your last question, you should forward links, write thank you notes etc. to your existing contacts AND at the same time to whom you're trying to make a contact with to show that it was not a one time rendez-vous but willing to start a new relationship or network with these new people outside of your existing network.
