below Explanation: First, "do the trite stuff—write thank you notes; forward links to articles; follow up using social media". This is important when you ask for referrals and introductions to new people outside your network, i.e. people you've never known before. This is the least you could do to show your appreciation and gratitude to your people in your existing network. If they didn't help you, you wouldn't have met these new people. So saying thank you, a follow-up, forwarding links to articles, etc. is the minimum you should do. If you didn't show any sign of gratitude or appreciation and take referrals and introductions as granted, these people in your existing network will never or hardly go through hoops for you next time. It is because of these people in your network that you are going to meet new people outside of your network. As to your last question, you should forward links, write thank you notes etc. to your existing contacts AND at the same time to whom you're trying to make a contact with to show that it was not a one time rendez-vous but willing to start a new relationship or network with these new people outside of your existing network. |
