Let me respond to your comment, Mike. Negative sloping may have a very well defined meaning in economics but here the term appears to have been hijacked to make the text more mathematical than it is. It is the same with such illicit borrowings of physics terms as the uncertainty principle, entropy, relativity to unrelated areas of life. Ageism (dyskryminacja ze względu na wiek) is an attitude, hence oczekiwania; similarly, "image that older people themselves internalize" is also a subjective feeling. I would hate to plot human emotions on an x-y graph with an downward or an upward slope. My aim here was to humanize that negative sloping. You are right, of course, as to the literal meaning of the term.

Pardon me for butting in on you, but 'negative sloping' is just a line/curve that is trending downward from left to right. The phrase is often used in technical analysis of trends on the stock exchange. Here we have 'the negative sloping of human potential'. I think it's a pretty stable trend rather than 'expectations' (oczekiwania). Correct me if I'm wrong.
