The significance of the section "erforderlichen Bauteilschutzansatz zu reduzieren" is somehow not clear. It does not seem to make any sense to me. Can someone help?

The text has otherwise been talking about IMPROVING component protection, but this reads differently.

component protection threshold
Explanation:
This means a certain value that triggers a switch-off, disconnect or reduction in either a program or a device with the purpose of protecting the functionality of the device outside of the specified parameters, i.e. temperature or pressure. The point on which the device will shut off or reduce performance is the threshold point. I've read the whole paragraph of your source and that's how I understand it. Protection threshold is used in similar scenarios in electronics and mechanics.

approach for component protection

Explanation:
The bottom line is that intercooling allows maximum performance with maximum engine component protection.

Abstract:
A method for controlling the powertrain includes the following steps: (a) receiving a torque request; (b) determining, via a system control module, whether the internal combustion engine is operating in an engine component-protection mode

Rock Oil Gamma is a mineral 4 stroke engine oil, meeting the exacting demands of classic bikes and modern high performance motorcycle engines where a specific mineral oil is required. Advanced additives ensure maximum engine component protection and superior resistance to deposits and corrosion, resulting in extended engine life and optimum performance under the most arduous of conditions.

On 18 September 2015, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation of the Clean Air Act to German automaker Volkswagen Group after it was found that Volkswagen had intentionally programmed turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engines to activate certain emissions controls only during laboratory emissions testing. The programming caused the vehicles' nitrogen oxide (NOx) output to meet US standards during regulatory testing but emit up to 40 times more NOx in real-world driving.[11] Volkswagen put this programming in about eleven million cars worldwide, and in 500,000 in the United States, during model years 2009 through 2015.

“The software does not alter emissions levels, but it ensures after a cold start that the catalytic converters quickly reach their working temperature and emissions cleaning takes effect,” a Volkswagen spokesman said.
But CARB chair Mary Nichols told Reuters the lab tests had repeatedly shown low levels of NOx emissions during the test followed by far higher levels seconds later.
“It’s almost impossible to explain something like that in any way other than something about the software that controls the operation,” Ms Nichols insisted to Reuters yesterday.

Dobrindt said none of the newly scrutinized models were found to have rigged engine control software devices of the kind used by Volkswagen, but that they displayed elevated levels of nitrogen oxide in both laboratory and real-world tests.
Some models used technology to switch off the vehicles’ emissions treatment systems at certain temperatures to protect the engine, he said.
While such technology is legal, investigators found that the temperatures at which the emissions treatment systems were throttled didn’t appear to be justified in all cases, so the five manufacturers agreed to voluntarily recall those vehicles. Additionally, all engine protection features would have to be declared and fully explained by manufacturers in future before their cars are approved by German authorities, Dobrindt said.

[0002] In some approaches, air/fuel imbalances may be monitored using a proportional oxygen sensor (e.g., UEGO) to calculate an amount of imbalance by determining a high frequency component of the sensor signal related to cylinder-to-cylinder deviation. In such an approach, cylinder air/fuel imbalance may be estimated by accumulating the amount of cylinder-to-cylinder deviations per calibratable RPM window, for example

[0073] Further, the mass fuel calculator interfaces with the lambda domain interface 704 to receive a fuel/air ratio as determined in lambda domain 704. Lambda domain 704 determines an air/fuel ratio via an air/fuel ratio calculator 714 which determines an air/fuel ratio based on a variety of parameters 715 such as lost fuel, setpoints, and an open versus closed loop feed. In some examples, the routine determines parameters 715 based on operating conditions, for example, the routine may determine an amount of lost fuel based on a lost fuel model and/or from air/fuel sensor readings, a lambda setpoint value may be based on a predetermined or desired engine power enrichment and/or engine component protection parameters, for example

But more importantly, innovative approaches are being required to meet the more stringent emission regulation and satisfy the increased fuel efficiency expectation whilst still maintaining a similar engine performance.

The traditional approach for engine protection is using a high SAPS/Zinc, heavy duty oil. Based on my own research I think the future of engine lubrication will be low SAPS plus nano additives based on Boron, Tungsten and Molybdenum among others to protect both the engine and the emission system.
