Portuguese term or phrase: leitura de afogadilho
Hi everyone! I'm translating the following academic abstract and I'm struggling with this term 'leitura de afogadilho'. Is this a term used outside this piece? Thanks for your help!

brief reading

Explanation:
The closest match would be a “brief reading”, similar to what we do with newspapers headlines.

In fact, the author even mentions that such misconception comes from a careless reading of published essays/articles.

Afogadilho é pressa, precipitação, afobação. A expressão "de afogadilho" significa apressadamente.

Maybe you can say

a slapdash reading

"slapdash" apparently puts together the ideas of hastiness and carelessness (which are conveyed by "afogadilho"):

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/slapdash?s=t

slapdash = hasty and careless; offhand

MacMillan:
slapdash = doing something quickly and not carefully

Ex.:

The Southern Manifesto: Massive Resistance and the Fight ...
https://books.google.com/books?isbn=1626741867

In summary, a combination of omission, mistaken authorship, as well as both a conscience distortion and slapdash reading of the historical record...

While no academic would confess to shoddy methodology or slapdash reading, many are blasé about their incompetence at writing...

Following comments in the discussion box regarding the "negative connotations" of the term "Afogadilho", I would change my suggestion to:

"A quick skim over", which, in the context, may add some negativity to my term.

Example sentence(s):
  • "Skimming is useful when you want to survey a text to get a general idea of what it is about. In skimming you ignore the details and look for the main ideas. "
  • "Skimming and scanning are two very different strategies for speed reading.

agree  Richard Purdom: exactly, that's what we called it when teaching students to find information in a text

neutral  Matheus Chaud: Afogadilho usually has a negative connotation (like in this text, as it is opposed to "a systematic study") and it is related to hastiness, but also to precipitation, carelessness, not thinking enough. It is used to show disapproval.

haphazard reading

Explanation:
e.g.

Like many others, I must admit to the arbitrary nature of keeping up with web-comics resulting in a haphazard reading of those I am interested in, but over the last 12 months in particular, Boulet's work has shown more innovation, imagination, range and technique than some do in an entire career (and I offer that statement minus hyperbole), that a daily vigilance has been imperative.
http://www.comicsandcola.com/2014/01/in-praise-of-boulet.htm...

Blackmur's new volume of essays, The Lion and the Honeycomb, provides a welcome opportunity to check on an impression derived from a somewhat haphazard reading of the literary magazines.

But much criticism pretending to depth and finality stems from a haphazard reading of only part of his work, including an excellent and entertaining but sometimes very misleading selection of his letters, which is then interpreted by way of assumptions based on the theatrical public image.
