French term or phrase: stockage vs conservation
I am doing a back translation of a patient information sheet/ICF and am confused as to the different between these two terms? Are they not both translated as 'storage'?

This is describing where the patient's confidential information might be sent:

À des établissements de conservation ou prestataires de services d’informatique dématérialisée externes approuvés, afin de répondre aux exigences de conservation et de stockage des dossiers d’étude.

My petit Bob seems to indicate that in this context they both should be translated as 'storage' so then do I need to translate it as:

'to meet the storage and storage requirements of study files'

...since this is a back translation?

Thanks in advance!

storage vs retention
Explanation:
"Retention and storage" is a frequently used phrase with regard to medical records. The original document is retained for a specified period and then stored in a digital format. Previously, storage would probably have been on microfiche.

storage vs preservation

Explanation:
I think "conservation" could mean preservation, and "storage and preservation of records" is a very common phrase and idea in archiving contexts.

"Preservation", in this context, simply means keeping them.

But "keeping", applied to records or files, can imply maintaining, updating, which is not what this means, of course.

agree  Charles Davis: Retention was my other idea! On reflection I think it's probably better than preservation here. My trouble is that I've spent too much time in historical archives.

-> I saw your explanation in the Discussion section, but think that procedure ignores some basic fact that, as words are frequently not precisely equivalent between languages, a translator may not have an equivalent target term e.g. pitcher -> carafe -> jug.
