Robert:
On purpose I included, when providing my answer, a reference which lists both sala comedor AND sala de estar in the same apartment. Once again based on my experience, sala de estar is NOT a formal living room, is similar to what Americans called a den. "De estar" where one hangs out (usually de TV is in this room). Sala comedor is specific to a FORMAL living room/dining room combo...Of course it is up to you to chose whatever fits your context best.
Here is one more for your convenience:
Excelente departamento de 3 dormitorios, 2 baños completos, baño de visita, Sala Comedor, Bar, Terraza, Cocina, Lavandería, Área de Servicio completa, Sala de Estar.

Thanks to Taña for quickly putting me on the right track and to Lorena for providing a definitively correct expansion and translation. I have also included Neil's suggestion in the glossary entry (which seems limited to UK usage).

neutral  Robert Carter: As Lorena says, it's more likely "sala comedor", that's the common expression here in Mexico too, as it's one room loosely divided into two areas, a lounge and dining room.

-> Thank you. We won´t know for sure, will we? I went with "sala de comedor" in light of the presence of "estar" in this context. http://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen=sala...

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, Lorena. I just wonder that, if the term in my context does indeed refer to "a combination living-dining room," then what "estar" would refer to. I would have thought that "estar" = "living room."
