English term or phrase: public constituency
Dear all,

could you help me on this one? How would you best translated public constituency in below context?

"Together, through the millions of actions we took, we:

Showed that the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and the Climate Agreement have a real public constituency behind them. The 30 million actions taken across the year showed that the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and Climate Agenda are the people’s goals and agreements. Together we’ve made it clear that world leaders and the UN are accountable to us."

Thanks for your help!

base constituante réelle

Explanation:
Showed that the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and the Climate Agreement have a real public constituency behind them
=>
there is a real "constituency" => those advocating these ideas are not just speaking for themselves, there is amongst the public a real group that they represent (= it's the "constituency" that they represent)

constituency = la base constituante
=
ces iddée ont une base constituante réelle dans le public / parmi le public

it certainly doesn't sound like everyday language, but that's what it's meant and if you change it for something else "easier to digest", you lose the logical connection with the next sentence

"Together we’ve made it clear that world leaders and the UN are accountable to us"

if you omit that "we" [the public / at least a large part of it] are their "constituency", why should they be "accountable to us"?

I sounds a bit like inverted logic: instead of a constituency electing a representative, proponents of some idea discover that they are speaking only for themselves, but that there is group that they could consider as their constituency, and see themselves as representing them!

An electoral district (also known as a constituency, riding, ward, division, electoral area or electorate) is a territorial subdivision for electing members to a legislative body. Generally, only voters (constituents) who reside within the district are permitted to vote in an election held there.
