the "fliegen" image s now been largely replaced by the more stationary idiom "auf etwas stehen" :(
The only wordplay that I can think of that has to do with speed and flying would be "flugs" but this is really, really old-fashioned...!

Is this actually used? Does it imply only being attracted to or wild about something rather than getting to something quickly? Could it be adapted somehow here to make use of the wordplay with fliegen?

It may be common, but it's still a mistake :-) The person who wrote your reference said it's "the direction in which a bee flys", so I wouldn't give their spelling too much credence.

I'm 90% sure it's a mistake. I've never seen beeline spelled this way before, and the website is about booking flights to any destination, so it doesn't refer to one particular city. I would just say whatever the German is for "make a beeline for your rental car".

Hatte (wie Phil) eigentlich auch ein Wortspiel mit dem B erwartet, aber „B line“ anstatt „beeline“ scheint wirklich sehr weit verbreitet zu sein und wird von vielen nicht einmal als Fehler erkannt.

I thought perhaps "B" rather than "bee" was a play on words, but it doesn't appear to be. It's on the Virgin America website, and I wouldn't expect to see a very obvious spelling mistake there.
