Explanation:
1.1.2. LE POSTE : SES CONSTITUANTS
Le poste est constitué essentiellement :
1) D'appareils haute tension :

— en limitant les surtensions provenant de coups de foudre sur les lignes (par l’installation d’éclateurs ou de parafoudres) ;
— en protégeant le poste contre les coups de foudre directs par un filet de garde constitué par des conducteurs aériens couvrant les installations.
Ces dispositifs sont reliés au réseau principal de terre du poste.

9.5.1 Lightning effects in power networks
The best know effect of lightning in power transmission or distribution networks is the direct lightning stroke either on a phase conductor or on a tower (or ground conductor). The protection of overhead lines against direct strikes is achieved by grounding wires mounted on towers where the wire is grounded.
:
9.5.2 Lightning effects on power network substation equipment
Here again direct and indirect stroke effects can take place …. The substation ground is usually a metallic mesh buried at 30-50 cm under the earth’s surface. Any lightning current hitting an overhead line entering the substation will be conducted to the ground by the arrester usually installed at the entrance of the substation. …

In order to prevent steep surges form entering an HV/MV substation, the HV lines are equipped with earth wires. Earth wires on MV lines close to the substation also assist. If the MV-line crossarms are earthed, this limits the overvoltage level which can be formed on the line. Often larger substations are themselves equipped with earth wires or masts to protect the substation from direct lightning strikes.

In an electrical substation a ground (earth) mat is a mesh of conductive material installed at places where a person would stand to operate a switch or other apparatus; it is bonded to the local supporting metal structure and to the handle of the switchgear, so that the operator will not be exposed to a high differential voltage due to a fault in the substation.

protection level 1
The purpose of level 1 protection is to limit the effects of direct impacts on electrical installations by diverting the lightning current to the desired locations.
Controlled diversion of lightning current to precise points is possible using:
• lightning rods implementing the striking distance principle. These thin rods are placed at the top of the structure requiring protection and connected to earth by the most direct path (via conductors descending around the protected structure and connected to the earthing network).
Observations have shown that a good protection against direct lightning strikes is provided in a cone with its summit at the top of the lightning rod and extending downward at 45° angles with respect to the vertical.
• Faraday cages or shields which consist of closed grids of horizontal and vertical conductors connected to an earthing network. The mesh size must be less than 15 m and vertical rods are placed at the nodes on the top part. Coverage of the zone requiring protection is equivalent to that provided by a multitude of lightning rods.
In either case, lightning rods or cages, the electro-geometrical model determines the protected zone using the fictive sphere method.
The point of impact of the lightning strike is determined by the first object on the ground falling within the striking distance d of the leader.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a new formalism for analyzing the transient behavior of grounding systems associated to substation structures (Faraday-cage) under lightning strokes in transient regime. The protective device to study is formed of an aerial wire mesh connected to a grounding grid by simple conductors called down conductors.

neutral  Tony M: That's a 'filet garde-corps' / 'filet de sécurité', which are both quite different from the term here; this seems to be something potentially electrical.

agree  Tony M: Certainly the right idea, though I'm not sure about your actual term, which doesn't appear per se amongst the welter of (not-always-relevant) detail above

agree  chris collister: Could well be, but where does "aerial" come in the text? A Faraday cage is an enclosure in which the potential is everywhere zero, and I'm not sure that this applies here.
12 hrs
-> Thank you! The text is unclear in regard to the location of the "filet de garde" (foundation or air). My research resulted in this interpretation.
