There are two kinds Marriage Acts: the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and Special Marriage Act, 1954. The Hindu Marriage Act is applicable only to the Hindus, whereas the Special Marriage Act is applicable to all citizens of India.

Requirements of Hindu Marriage Act (HMA) according to section 5 of HMA

Minimum age limit is 21 for boy and 18 for girl.
Parties must be Hindu, unmarried or divorced, and if already married then at the time of marriage his/her spouse should not be alive.
Both parties must be physically and mentally healthy.
Parties must not be come in SAPINDA and PROHIBITED DEGREE.
