French term or phrase: Unité mixte de service
L’élaboration des stratégies communes en matière de moyens structurants (équipements scientifiques et pédagogiques, services numériques,…);
Le pilotage de structures partagées de recherche pour les établissements qui le souhaitent, dont les Unités Mixtes de Service ;

I'm looking for a suitable translation for this term - a distinct legal entity responsible for providing/coordinating resources used for research purposes in universities.

Is there an equivalent term in BE, and how could you translate/describe it succinctly?

Thanks
David

Unité mixte de service (UMS) + explanation
Explanation:
This is a specific (French) structure for a temporary partnership between teaching and research institutions. As such, the French name should be retained, with an explanation (I suggest the phrase in bold above).

Note that your own reference makes clear that a UMS is not "a distinct legal entity": "Cette entité est contractuelle et dépourvue de personnalité juridique propre."

neutral  B D Finch: While the use of that term by the CNRS itself would normally indicate that it was an accepted translation, the poor quality of English on that webpage makes it very unreliable.
