French term or phrase: Allumage
This is from a history of e-commerce. It is talking about independent marketplaces being created "dans le sillage d’eBay". The paragraph is as follows:

I have never seen 'allumage' used in this sense before and am stuck as to how to translate it here. I don't know if we could talk about 'ignition' here in English? Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance :-)

I've just noticed that it uses "mass critique" earlier, but you could translate that as "size". "Mass critique" and "allumage" basically mean the same thing.

Explanation:
Marketing terms. Thought there may be a more succinct way of expressing this, marketing language is usually more obfuscating and euphemistic than communicative. I wouldn't use "ignition".

allumage d'un marché
marketplace ignition / to kickstart a marketplace

Explanation:
le problème de l’allumage propre à tout marché

the problem faced by every marketplace - how to ignite it

the problem faced by every marketplace - how to kickstart it

here it's not about "the market" as a general concept, but about some specific market, so "marketplace" is preferable;

these people are trying to create a "virtual/online marketplace" and they need to "ignate" the fire - create a continuous / sustained activity that is going to make sellers and buyers come back to that marketplace.

exactly what these people are doing:

Explanation:
I think this merely refers to the information buyers and sellers have about the market. If buyers do not know who/how many the sellers are, they will not sign up, and similarly for sellers who may be know how many buyers are out there.

Catch 22 (in this context)

Explanation:
Rough translation: with the principal difficulty being the "Catch-22" problem typical of pretty much all nascent markets - in other words, the sellers won't subscribe until the buyers present on the platform are sufficiently numerous and the buyers, on their part, won't connect until the benefits of doing so are sufficiently broad and substantial.
You can't translate it word for word here.
