Le précurseur de ce concept est sans doute J. R. R. Tolkien qui a développé tout un monde, les Terres du milieu, dans lequel s'inscrivent ses romans (Bilbo le hobbit, 1937, Le Seigneur des anneaux, 1954-1954).
