I am trying to understand what "el corazon...ha asomado la oreja" means in the extract below.

This is from Dominican author Contreras (1986).

TT attempt: “Good afternoon Father” we say very formally, extracting ourselves from each other. He answers with his very black eyes, his mouth and his right hand. The father´s heart almost fell out of his chest, he was clearly deep in his own thoughts.

My attempt of "heart falling out of chest" makes it sound like the father is frightened which I don´t think is the intention, more like they caught the father unaware??

Do anyone know what a similar English expression might be?

Appreciate advice
Kind regards

the father revealed his feelings
Explanation:
As Carol pointed out!

"Descubrirse sus intenciones o pensamientos."

"Heart" is probably redundant.

His heart peeked out

Explanation:

“As he adjusted her hold and tightened his fingers around hers, she could feel it to the depth of her toes. This man was a mystery (…) Yet as she’d watched him with a priest, seen him with the various children they'd come across, his heart peeked out.”

neutral  Carol Gullidge: this is the meaning as I understand it, but "His heart peeked out" sounds rather odd to me :(
