- Le terme "fournisseur" (vendor or supplier) est, en principe réservé aux entreprises ou aux entrepreneurs individuels qui vendent des marchandises (biens de consommation ou d'équipement).
- Le terme "prestataire" (service provider) est, en principe, réservé aux entreprises ou entrepreneurs individuels qui proposent des services, au sens large du terme : des réparations en plomberie, électricité au conseil en communication, en passant par les soins médicaux ou la sécurité des personnes.
- Cependant, au fil du temps, dans la pratique, alors que le terme "prestataire" est resté exclusivement réservé aux prestataires de services, celui de "fournisseur" a été étendu à certains services, en plus de la vente de marchandises.
