I agree with colleague Psicutrinius above, it can't be the drill or drill bit, and, as Robin says, they are probably test or sampling boreholes, we just don't know for certain.

There are many types, thus to decide on a particular one more context would be needed (whether it is intended for exploration -exploration drilling-, to pinpoint accurately a deposit -definition drilling- etc), probe hole, pilot hole...

surely "test boring/drilling" would be the act of drilling a "test hole". That's why they are called "sondajes" in Spanish because like a "sonda" they are used for measurements / testing the terrain.
