"fill up" or "overwhelm", it's all just a matter of the degree (and consequence) of the flooding! :-) The word "hijack" certainly implies taking over the function of that part of the brain.

Thanks for your contribution! My doubt derives from the fact that I have found a passage in another book from the same author, in which it seems that "flood" may have the meaning of "overwhelm" or "pervasive influence"...

Indeed, "flood" is often used in the sense of something being overwhelmed, but it can also refer to a large flow: "To move into or fill in large numbers or amounts: People flooded the square. His inbox was flooded with mail." From TheFreeDictionary.com

actually, the verb "flood" seems to convey an image of "being overwhelmed" by signals/information from the downstairs brain, such as in the case of a strong activation of parts such as the amygdala, a sort of "hijacking" by the lower regions ??
