Произведем нехитрый расчет. Допустим, каждому абоненту выделяется в среднем 1 Мбит/с (исхожу из того, что все абоненты одновременно не пользуются данным подключением по VPN, поэтому у каждого конкретного абонента скорость доступа может быть в разы выше). Тогда для того, чтобы обслужить 1 тысячу абонентов, потребуется суммарная пропускная способность, равная 1 Гбит/c. Соответственно, если обслуживаются сотни тысяч абонентов (“hundreds of thousands of users”), суммарная пропускная способность составляет сотни гигабит в секунду. Думаю, отсюда ноги растут у “massive gigabit tier servers”. Впрочем, это я очень по-дилетантски рассуждаю.

agree  mk_lab: Только, пожалуй, massive относится не с числу гигабит, а к количеству серверов. Что-то вроде: "обширная сеть серверов высокого уровня с гигабитной скоростью передачи"

  -> Спасибо! Согласен с тем, что серверов как минимум несколько, а вот насчет «высокого уровня» не уверен. Думаю, в действительности это обычный провайдер, каких много. P.S. Сдается мне, в наше время VPN — не rocket science. :-)

neutral  Lazyt3ch: Сильно подозреваю, что “tier server” — это всего лишь красивое выражение, приглянувшееся копирайтеру. :-) (Намекаю на то, что не заметил в оригинале никакой «многоуровневой архитектуры».) P.S. Вам виднее.
