French term or phrase: zone du croissant pauvre
"une grande disparité socio-économique existe entre le nord et le sud de la région, et une zone du croissant pauvre"

Not sure whether this refers to a hard core of poverty or whether this is a geographically-bound poor area.

Any suggestions for a translation into English?

Thanks!

a crescent-shaped area with high levels of poverty
Explanation:
This very much depends upon whether your text is about Brussels or another place with a similarly crescent-shaped, economically deprived area. If not, then it shouldn't really refer to "le croissant pauvre" in the source text and you should omit "crescent-shaped" in translation; however a translator's note would be a good idea.

crescent of poverty/poverty crescent

Explanation:
Both versions of the expression are used not only for Brussels (see ref.1 p.4 & ref.2 p.8), but also for similar-shaped zones around some US cities (Rochester, Charlotte, Austin), around other cities such as Lima, or bigger regions in the world. Besides, both versions seem to me pretty self-explanatory (in their nature if not their location).
