I have "comically forms ripples where it lies" but am not satisfied.

From a work on architectural monuments of Constantinople written in a "popular history" style.


Остатки этого, так понравившегося Богородице храма, переплетенные с фундаментами бани, теперь видны между акведуком и нынешней церковью. Знакомая нам полосатая мелкая слоеная кладка, чередующая кирпич и камень, смешно ложится складками там, где здание меняет форму и высоту, например, у восточной части.

I am not sure layers of masonry / brickwork can be "comical". Perhaps a softer adjective would do her, something like "funny / curious / peculiar / odd"?..
