Para além das impurezas de substituição, as intersticiais podem também alterar a coloração das amostras, as suas propriedades físicas, etc., como é o caso da inserção de carbono na rede cristalina do ferro para a produção do aço. Defeitos de limite de grão, ou seja, fiadas reticulares defeituosas, em que não existe um alinhamento perfeito, podem ocorrer quando cristais em crescimento acabam por se juntar, podendo até formar maclas.
