I understand the general sense but am struggling with how to translate "s'autoproduire comme genre par l'image." My first impulse was to translate "s'autoproduire" as "self-invent" or "invent your own..." but that term is used in the second phrase. This is a question asked by an interviewer of a woman involved in a French organization that advocates for greater gender equality in the film industry.

I think the solution is to unpack that tight Frenchness - rather than "self produce yourself as gender through the image", in English we would say "using image to create your own gender" "to create a gender for yourself"
