French term or phrase: déplacer
This is part of the instructions for crocheting a shell motif which will repeat and eventually become a hat.le of the section.

"Sauter 1 maille et crocheter une maille serrée dans la suivante (3ème maille du rang précédent). Sauter à nouveau 1 maille. Répéter à partir de *.
A chaque rond suivant, déplacer les coquillages et les mailles et serrées. "

I have no idea what this could mean so am unable to start the question off with my own suggestion.

stagger
Explanation:
When crocheting the shell stitch, the shells can be stacked on top of each other in each row or round, or they can be staggered. The pattern here is calling for the latter.

A shell stitch (or fan stitch) is a crochet motif often used as a border around other patterns or in ***staggered rows*** to create a distinctive fabric pattern.

You will work your shell stitch into each chain 1 space around so that the shell stitches are stacked on top of one another, NOT into the space between the shell stitches (which would result in ***staggered shell stitches***).
