Technically, there's no reason why a beam made of aluminium, fibreglass or plastic shouldn't be called a girder, especially if it has the classic I-beam cross-section. It's just that, in practice, it's unusual. And I have never come across a wooden girder...

I believe that the difference between girders and ordinary beams (of course, girders are beams) is more functional than material. I understand girders to be collector beams, to be particularly deep and capable of taking rolling loads.

I'd say that aluminium or magnesium "girders" (for they wouldn't be steel in an aircraft) would be unusual. Non-ferrous items such as this are usually referred to as "beams".

I think beam sounds OK
