Spanish term or phrase: el pop... heredero de
Hi,

I'm translating a tourist newsletter about events in Tenerife from Spanish to British English. One of the events is music performance by Pablo Lopez and is the section where this tricky phrase appears. Here it is below so that you can see it in context:

"Lo hace con su nuevo y primer disco, en el que combina el pop español melódico de toda la vida, heredero de Alejandro Sanz, con la pulsión pianística de Billy Joel, Elton John o los mismísimos Queen."

I was thinking of a translation along the lines of "hugely influenced by Alejandro Sanz", but I think that this may be moving away from the Spanish a little much. Anyone else got any other suggestions please? Thanks in advance :)

pop ... in the style of
Explanation:
I think this is more or less what it amounts to, and it sounds reasonably natural to me. There's also "in the manner of" or "in the vein of", but "style" is the most idiomatic, I'd say.

I also thought of "following on from" or "taking its lead from".

Sorry; should have checked before posting. I didn't see that Noni had already suggested "style". But personally I would steer clear of any attempt to render "heredero" literally.

Or possibly "which owes a lot to" or "with its roots in"?

Or even "in the tradition of".

People might start getting annoyed if I make too many suggestions, but I've just jotted these things down as they came to mind. Pity not to, because one of them might be what you want.

Here's something to kick off with, which is closer to the original, although not necessarily better.

I await a reasonable brainstorming session!

agree Noni Gilbert Riley: Quite re your jotting comment. I wholeheartedly agree that it would be a pity not to. Perhaps we should campaign for a brainstorming invitation button. Lots of possibilities among your suggestions.

Explanation:
This would be my take on it. Of course "Spanish pop" is also possible, but I'd be inclined to say "Latin" (but you're not asking about that anyway, so it's neither here nor there).

Hope it helps.

By the way, Matthew, Pablo López is quite a sensation here in his home province of Málaga, where I've lived for many years. If you haven't heard him on Youtube yet, check him out. You'll see what I mean about this (God-awful) combo of sounds I refer to! :)

Example sentence(s):
 • Lo hace con su nuevo y primer disco, en el que combina el pop español melódico de toda la vida, heredero de Alejandro Sanz, con la pulsión pianística de Billy Joel, Elton John o los mismísimos Queen.
 • He does this on his brand new debut album, which combines the classic Latin pop sound made famous by Alejandro Sanz, with the upbeat piano styles of Billy Joel, Elton John or the mighty Queen.
