Hallo allemaal! Hoe zouden jullie in het onderstaande stukje "a squelching halt" vertalen?

So private companies are to bid for railway franchises. So British Rail has various proposals to prevent the first snow of winter bringing the nation to a squelching halt, or at any rate to announce the halt earlier and more clearly. I hope the proposals are not “side-lined”, a railway term that has passed into our common stock of language.
Will the passengers who have taken the 13.05 train to Slough please bring it back again? The train now arriving on platforms 6, 7 and 9 is coming in sideways. I can never make out what the station announcers are saying anyway, but it fills me with a twittering dread that I am missing something, probably the train.
For many of us the railways take up a considerable portion of the day. The return trip on the blessed Circle Line from Notting Hill Gate to Tower Hill consumes at least two and often three hours. Must they monotonously announce that due to an inaudible earlier incident somewhere or other, customers will experience slightly longer journey times than usual to all destinations?
We are not customers, but poor bleeding passengers. And delay is the element by which we travel. If the trains ran on time, that would merit an announcement.

heeft twee betekenissen:

1) to make a sucking sound by walking or moving in something soft and wet

In dat kader had ik 'zompend tot stilstand komt' overwogen.
Ik vond dat echter toch niet passen

...om te voorkomen dat bij het vallen van de eerste wintersneeuw het land zompend tot stilstand komt

Ik vind 'zompend' niet passen bij treinen en ook niet direct bij 'eerste wintersneeuw'
En ik vraag me af of 'zompend tot stilstand komen' wel zo'n gelukkige uitdrukking is.

Of 'in de blubber vastloopt' :-)

2) to stop something from continuing to develop or spread
synonym: squash

In dat kader heb ik 'volkomen wordt platgelegd' voorgesteld, wat het bijkomend voordeel heeft dat het een gangbare uitdrukking is in deze context.

om te voorkomen dat bij het vallen van de eerste wintersneeuw het land volkomen wordt platgelegd

En uiteindelijk zijn het de railways die de boel platleggen.
