Although it was admirable of you to attempt to anonymise your text, you did miss out one rather revelatory word ;-)

This is what led me to my interpretation (as set out under Chris's answer below) of "sales divided by 1000", just because the volumes involved really are so huge! Even when I worked for them around 25 years ago, in a small provincial town branch in the UK, we were selling something in the order of 5k units / week.
