Curage can refer to either dredging the bottom of ponds or scraping matter from the inside of pipes etc. Either way, the stuff they take out is sludge.

By the way, I agree the qualifier "sewage" shouldn't be added to his as 'sewage' generally implies human-generated waste whereas, if wastewater and stormwater systems are not separately routed, the 'curage' can also contain earth, leaf matter, etc, all pretty much indisnguishable and simply 'sludge'.

  -> Why not, it deals with sludge removal from wastewater. That's normal in sewage systems. Please read my references! Not convincing?
